Psychotherapy: Initial parent/carer consultation

An initial consultation with parent/carer(s) to explore their concerns about their child, types of support available and consider next steps. Young people over the age of 18 may choose to come on their own.

Wednesday appointments -> The Practice Rooms.
Thursday appointments -> The Charing Cross Centre

Educational Psychology Assessment commissioned by the Local Authority

These appointments are for schools or parents, who have been instructed by me to schedule an appointment for an Educational Psychology Assessment. These are commissioned by The Local Authority to contribute towards Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) processes.

Once a time slot has been confirmed I will be in contact to agree a structure for the school visit. If the child or young person is unable to attend school, alternative arrangements will be made. There is a usual process of involvement but this can be adjusted within reason when required, e.g.
9:15am - Meeting with parents and school staff that know the young person best.
10:15am - classroom observation / discussion with young person / further 1:1 assessment TBA.

Child psychology drop-in: single consultation (online)

This is a single consultation (online) for parents/carers or professionals that work with children and families. It is a 60 minute session to explore an issue or concern relating to a child or young person.

As well as a confirmation email upon booking, you will receive another email or invitation for your online consultation. Please check your spam folder if you do not receive these emails.

Your desired outcome from the consultation will be explored with you at the beginning of the session. Outcomes might include:
> to begin exploring an issue or concern to gain insight and deepen your understanding what might be going on
> to start identifying or defining what the problem might actually be
> to explore what your feelings might be telling you in response to a situation or child
> to explore how your experiences from the past might influence how you feel and respond to a child or situation in the present
> to develop ideas, strategies or ways forward with a problem
> to consider how to speak to a child or young person about an issue
> to try and understand what a child might need based on their history and presentation
> to consider what services or professionals are best placed to help a given child or in a given situation, and where you might find them
> to consider a specific question you might have about a child or young person
> to gauge if further sessions or more support might be required if a problem feels more complex

What will broadly happen in the session:
> you will be asked questions to explore your goals from the consultation
> you will be asked questions to explore and unpack an issue, including behaviours, feelings, relationships and beliefs
> You will be listened to carefully and you might be asked questions to clarify you are understood
> It will be collaborative and you will be in control. Like driving a car, you will have the break and accelerator, you will be invited to explore different avenues but you can decide to put on the break, change directions and explore different/preferred avenues
> you will be invited to hear different ideas, feelings or associations and to share your responses to them
> You might be asked what you have tried already or to brain storm together possible solutions or next steps
> You will be asked how you experienced the session and if you would like any follow-up
> You might be invited to provide feedback or an update at a later date
